The Essentials

This is a modern version of an “ancient Chinese puzzle game” that sustains your children’s level of effort and is addictive once they/you succeed a few times. Either alone, against an opponent, or with teammates this puzzle game is excellent!

My version contains a black and red set of “tangoes” (current versions are blue and orange or blue and black) and one (1) card set of 27 cards (double sided for 54 puzzles). The objective is to form the image shown using all 7 tangoes pieces. There is an answer key at the bottom of the back of the card you are working on.

This game targets:  visual-spatial orientation, manipulation, problem solving, goal directed behavior, teamwork (if you design it that way), pre-math skills, and executive functioning. For children with special needs, this game will elevate their ability to play these types of games and gain skills, while engaging with socially appropriate objects. Moreover, it is easy to steadily increase a child’s independence with chaining-type strategies.

Parents, therapists, and kid consultants, give this game high marks for learning, interaction, and repeat playing.  This game merits being part of the standard rotation at home and in the clinical setting!   There is a Tangoes Junior for kids for younger kids or kids who require more time to develop these skills.

Fun Factor

This game has an excellent Family Fun Factor and is enjoyed solo or with peers. The puzzles are challenging and addictive to solve. Race against friends and family members to complete a puzzle card before time runs out.

You can facilitate that a child learn to partner with a friend/adult to solve the puzzle together, in a fun way as you facilitate increased independence. Parents were surprised at how quickly they became actively interested in meeting the challenge with their kids and on their own.

Set-Up and Clean-Up

Set-up, clean-up, and storage of this game is easy. The packaging is strong and easily portable.  The solid container holds the cards and pieces without damaging them when removed and replaced. The cards themselves are sturdy and easy to handle without bending them if you have adequate hand skills.

The IF-THEN’S and the BUT’S

There is no timer included. Listed are a few options for visual/auditory timers below.

For multiple users and treatment sessions, laminate the cards for easy sanitation and repeat use. Enlarge and laminate the cards to compensate for decreased visual skills; though this changes the proportions, it is still a viable work around. Two (2) sample laminators include:

HOW TO AUGMENT THE USE OF THIS PRODUCT

Depending on the toy or game, as therapists and educators, it is typical that we vary the way we use the game and its components to facilitate underlying skills that may be required to play the game for children who are differently abled. We can increase general learning and target specific learning areas, further enhance creativity and imagination, foster problem solving and memory, target additional physical (gross and fine motor) skills, social skills, communication; and foster sensory processing and modulation.

Through activity analysis, we learn how to maximize the use of the toys and games we use with our clients/students/patients. Here you will find some suggestions that may help you maximize the versatility in every product.
