The Essentials

There are five (5) different games to choose from when you play Spot It!  Players use their visual scanning and visual perceptual skills to quickly match a symbol/character on their card to the target card. Speed is a key component yet the challenge level is mild enough for new players or very young children. For older children it is easy to ramp up the speed challenge, as they master the game.

Spot It! is contains 55 cards with  8 random symbols on each. Each card is round which is a novelty the children react well to. There are over 50 symbols used in the game. The cards feel like a regular deck of cards and are durable. For children who tend to use excessive force when playing, I recommend laminating each card.

Having 5 game in one is an excellent feature and the versatility does not stop there — I have had the pleasure of watching kids create their own versions that either made it harder or easier depending on their skill level. All 5 versions consistently challenge the ability to discriminate what is “the same”, regardless of size and orientation, while also requiring varying levels of hand skills, coordination, and manipulation of the cards. The games are different enough that they feel fresh and keep the engagement going with seamless switching between different games.

There are nine (9) versions of the Spot It game in the collection, that we have worked with. The game play is essentially the same, but each version has a different focus category and are recommended for different ages. The list below indicates each variation and the recommended age groups.

Spot It – Alphabet (3+), Spot It – Animals (4 – 15 years), Spot It – Basic English (6+), Spot It – Camping (7 – 15 years), Spot It – Hip (13 – 30 years), Spot It – Numbers and Shapes (3 – 15 years), Spot It – On the Road (7 – adult), Spot It – Splash (7 – 15 years) water proof, Spot It – Sports (6 – 50 years)

Fun Factor

Parents, kids, and the panel of experts greatly enjoy this game. It is active, engaging, and elicits many laughs.  Spot It! Is a success for game play at home and repeat play was consistently reported. Kids love that it is easy to set-up, play, and switch the rules and play again.  Parents love the social aspect and that their younger kids can play too, at a slower pace.  This game is also socially appropriate to play with older children struggling with visual perception, ocular motor skills, and attention, as a wide range of ages enjoy this game.

The panel of experts, kid consultants, and the Toy Doctor herself give this game two thumbs up for high interaction and repeat playing – this game will definitely be in the standard rotation!

Set-Up and Clean-Up

Set-up the game can be accomplished in one (1) minute. All the cards and instructions for the 5 mini-games all fit into a cute, light, and durable round tin. This game is portable and easily stored making it easy to travel with and to have easy access to at home. The durability is good for a card game.

The IF-THEN’S and the BUT’S

No if-then’s or but’s on this game, other that the earlier suggestion to laminate if your child tends to manipulate things too forcefully.
