The Essentials

This game is addictive and is a good game to have on your home program recommendation list and to use within your treatment sessions or to supplement curriculum objectives. It builds reading comprehension or listening skills if the clues are read to the children,  deductive reasoning, sequencing skills, right-left discrimination, positional/prepositional and spatial awareness (up-down, left-right, backward-forward) and visual information processing.

Players follow a series of written clues and place colored chips in the specific sequence the clues dictate to solve the puzzle. There are 166 puzzles that get more advanced as you move from 1 – 166. Also included are 32 plastic colored chips (precaution – prevent mouthing of this item) and easy to follow instructions.

Determination to solve the puzzle is a challenge that players get hooked on.  It is an opportunity to facilitate frustration tolerance and coping when dealing with challenging tasks.

Fun Factor

Unexpectedly, this game has an excellent Family Fun Factor. The puzzles are challenging and can be enjoyed solo or in a group. Race against friends and family members to complete a certain number of puzzles within a predetermined amount of time or compete to see who can solve the puzzle first. You can facilitate that a child learn to partner with a friend to solve the puzzle together, in a fun way as you facilitate increased independence.

This game is a fun way to introduce the concept of right-left discrimination on self and out in the space in front of them, position, spatial orientation, reinforce color recognition/discrimination to young children and children with special needs. For children with special needs, this game will elevate their ability to play logic games that are also socially appropriate for their age.

Parents, therapists, and kid consultants, give this game high marks for learning, interaction, and repeat playing. This game merits being part of the standard rotation at home and in the clinical setting!

Set-Up and Clean-Up

Set-up, clean-up, and storage of this game is easy. The packaging is good and holds the cards and pieces without damaging them when removed and replaced – though I would recommend placing the chips in a ziploc. The cards themselves are sturdy and easy to handle without bending them if you have adequate hand skills.

The IF-THEN’S and the BUT’S

WARNING! CHOKING HAZARD – small pieces, not for children under 3 years old or if your child mouths non-edible items.

If your child does not read, read the instructions out loud. Laminate the cards for easy sanitation and repeat use. Enlarge and laminate the cards to compensate for decreased visual skills.

If your child tends to use too much pressure when sorting or passing out  the cards, I recommend laminating the cards to increase durability. Two (2) sample laminators include:

12″ Personal Laminator

9″ Personal Laminator

HOW TO AUGMENT THE USE OF THIS PRODUCT

Depending on the toy or game, as therapists and educators, it is typical that we vary the way we use the game and its components to facilitate underlying skills that may be required to play the game for children who are differently abled.

We can increase general learning and target specific learning areas, further enhance creativity and imagination, foster problem solving and memory, target additional physical (gross and fine motor) skills, social skills, communication; and foster sensory processing and modulation.

Through activity analysis, we learn how to maximize the use of the toys and games we use with our clients/students/patients. Here you will find some suggestions that may help you maximize the versatility in every product.

NOTE: Not all games lend to a wide variety of alternate strategies. The level and amount of suggestions will vary from game to game and may be added to from time to time.
