The Essentials
The rules and strategies of the game can be learned easily. It may take additional time and practice round(s) for children/young adults with communication or processing issues. Essentially, you play your cards and end your turn by drawing a card – if you are unfortunate and draw an “exploding kitten” that you can’t “diffuse”, you are out of the game. The primary objective is to be the last player standing.
There are 56 cards in the deck. The game includes cards that progress the game forward, as well as add some strategy and problem solving to the game. For example, there are cards that allow you: to skip your turn forcing others to play to instead, steal a card, take a sneak peek at the deck, to reshuffle the deck, counter an opponent’s play with a “Nope” card, and even counter an opponent’s ‘Nope” card with their own “Yup” card.
The game takes approximately 15 minutes play and is structured to always have a winner at the end. The design and illustrations keep the game light and fun, with plenty of giggles to be had. It is excellent for those times you need a short game. For example, it could be part of a collection of games played on “game night”, in between longer more complex games. It is also well suited for children with shorter attention spans and children that are just learning to use entry level strategy in their gaming.
Fun Factor
This game has an excellent Family Fun Factor! Adults and siblings (of different ages and skill levels) will enjoy this game. Adults are not needed though, it is fantastic for peer groups aged 7+ to play independently. Further this game is a fun way to introduce the concept of strategy to young children and children with special needs. For children with special needs, this game will elevate their ability to play simple strategy games that are also socially appropriate for their age. The panel of experts, kid consultants, and the Toy Doctor herself give this game two thumbs up for high interaction and repeat playing – this game will definitely be in the standard rotation!
Set-Up and Clean-Up
The ability to set-up, clean- up, and store this game is easy. The packaging is excellent – the box is sturdy with a magnetic lid and divided space for the cards and rule book. The cards themselves are sturdy and easy to handle without bending them if you have adequate hand skills.
The IF-THEN’S and the BUT’S
If you or your child does not have the hand skills to hold the cards, consider using a hands free card holder. These cards fit appropriately.
